Compared to wine grapes, table grapes require much lower amounts of nitrogen per acre since root systems are deep and there is a considerable amount of nitrogen stored in the root systems for use during the growing season.
Total seasonal amounts of nitrogen can vary significantly due to variety of grape as well as soil and cultural conditions and range between 25 and 75 lbs. N/acre/season with synthetic soluble fertilizers. Since organic sources of nitrogen will greatly reduce losses from the soil system compared to synthetic, recommended levels of Super Six should be approximately 20% lower than with synthetic, conventional programs. As such, a range of 15-50 lbs. N/acre is recommended and split into a number of applications.
Nitrogen is needed most during the rapid vegetative stages of growth during the spring and during bud break to early berry development.
Post harvest applications of nitrogen are highly recommended for rapid and efficient growth the following spring. Up to ½ the total amount of nitrogen can be applied right after harvest in August or September.
Average usage of Super Six would be approximately 40 lbs. N/acre/season or 70 gallons/acre.
