There are two basic tomato types; determinant and indeterminate which will effect the amounts of fertilizer used per season.
Indeterminate tomato types are also known as vining tomatoes. These tomatoes will continue to grow in size throughout the season, until killed by the first frost. Determinate tomato types grow to a fixed size. The growing season for determinant types is 65-70 days while indeterminate are 70-80 days.
An average program for conventional production of tomato using synthetic fertilizers is as follows:
- 40-60 lbs. N/acre pre-plant. If soils have a high CEC and are organic, 40 lbs. N is recommended.
Post Planting:
- First fruit cluster (dime size) = 3-4 lb. N/week
- Fruit clusters at dollar coin size: 6-7 lb. N/week
- Peak to end of harvest: 3-4 lb. N/week.
- Determinant types = 45 – 50 lbs. N/crop
- Indeterminate types = 50 – 60 lbs. N/crop
Average amount would be 50 lbs. N/acre or 88 gallons/acre/season
Organic nitrogen Super Six would be 30-40 gallons/acre/season depending upon soil type.
